This being the case, one can only ask "Why?". The only reason I can think of is that if they proceeded with their criminal prosecution of Kondratick, the Bishops of the OCA would then be revealed as a pack of homosexual party-animals who milked the till of the OCA for all it was worth for their orgies in Las Vegas, a tacit admission to the truth of the very worst of the rumors that circulated at the time of Herman's "resignation". How else to interpret throwing so much of the Church's money away to avoid going to court with a man who is clearly an embezzler?

I apparently have a lighter view of out-of-court settlements than many Orthodox bloggers. Moreover, during the time that the mess was being aired in public, I had less aversion to Met. Herman's handling (or, more accurately, his sweeping everything under the carpet) than just about anyone I knew.

The $250k pertained to "Fr." Bob's home remodeling. Met. Theodosius probably authorized it, just as he probably authorized the rest of the expenditures. I personally think that Bob was partly a fall guy and partly a lover of the gravy that Met. Theodosius was passing around the table.
